So what is the secret to weight loss?

Posted on Jan 9, 2015 by in Featured, General ramblings | 0 comments

oh…that’s right, there is no secret!

It’s not:

  • Taking a special pill
  • Taking supplements
  • Drinking buckets of green tea
  • Cutting out carbs
  • Cutting out meat…

Don’t let ANYONE tell you anything different. Loads of health agencies out there will make you believe that their product is amazing and you can lose xxx amount of lbs in xxxx amount of days. WHY? because they want your money!

If it was easy, everyone would be slim and none of us would ever be over weight.

So.. what is the secret?

There is no real secret but there is a formula. Basically, you have to be in calorie deficit.

Say what?

Ok.. you need to eat less calories that you actually burn. This  will involve improving or changing the food you eat and exercise.

So for example, if you burn 2500 calories a day but only eat 2000, you have created a calorie deficit of 500 each day. This forces the body to use non-food sources i.e fat to make up the shortfall, causing weight loss.

The first step is to figure out how many calories your body burns each day, here’s a good place to start. It goes off your body weight, your age and the level of physical activity

The next step is to track what you eat. There are loads of apps out there to help you do this on your phone, or you can simply write it down and work it out yourself. There’s loads of places out there you can find out the number of calories, plus most food has calories on the packets.

Of course, this is just an estimate so the only way to know if you’re eating the right amount of calories for your goals is to monitor your weight loss. You should aim to lost around 1-2lbs each week. So if you start losing too quickly, adjust your calories by 100/200 each day until your weight loss is steady. And equally if you’re gaining, lower your calorie intake.

Never ever go below 1200 calories.

Slow weight loss means that it will stay off. If you lose it too quickly through pills, or drastic dieting then you’ll end up making yourself ill, or you’ll just put the weight back on and more!
